About

Sue Olnick has wanted to open a consignment shop for more than 15 years. She loves finding interesting and unusual items at estate sales, auctions, yard sales and flea markets. Sue’s parents have been antique dealers specializing in glassware since she was a child, but Sue had no interest in the antiques business until she began decorating her own home.

It all started when she built a large home in Ellicott City and needed to furnish it. She moved into the four bedroom Colonial with finished basement and great room from a small townhouse with no basement. She didn’t want “department store” furnishings, so she began going to every auction and flea market she could find. Often she would find interesting items that wouldn’t be a good fit in her home, but she thought she should buy them just in case she found someone else who would want them.

Eventually, she had a garage and basement full of great stuff, so she decided to get a booth at Taylor’s Antique Mall in Ellicott City. She thought of the name ol’nicknacks around the same time and registered it with the state – knowing that she would use it for her own shop one day. Sue has been established in several antique malls, including Westminster Antique Mall, has sold on eBay, and has done numerous antique shows. She has also sold items in several consignment shops in the area, and always loved looking at the wide variety of items that people bring in to sell on consignment. Keeping items for a specific amount of time and reducing prices every month are also great ideas which she has incorporated into her shop.

Merchandise in ol’nicknacks consist of antiques, furniture, jewelry, home décor, musical instruments, and much more. Items are consigned for a period of four months, and the sales price on everything except artisan work is reduced by 15% every 30 days. At the end of the 120 day consignment period, unsold items are returned to the owners. The price of artisan work is not reduced in order to help the artist recover the time and cost of creating the item. Consignors split the sale price with the shop.

Ol’nicknacks also offers eBay listing services. Customers can bring in items to list on eBay. The customer will pay all eBay fees, a $10 ol’nicknacks listing fee, and if the item sells, split the sale price with ol’nicknacks. Ol’nicknacks also offers estate liquidation and decorator services.

Sue lives in the upstairs apartment which she plans to convert to retail space as needed. Ol’nicknacks is located at 502 Old Westminster Pike and is open for business: Thursday 10 am – 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am – 6 pm, Sunday 12pm – 5 pm, and consignments are accepted by appointment by calling 410-857-9948.
